About the Author:
Charles John Huffam Dickens (1812-1870) was a British writer whose notable works are Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, A Tale of Two Cities, David Copperfield etc. During his life time and even in present times, his works have always enjoyed great popularity and he is generally regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorian period. The present text is an adaptation from his popular short story The Magic Fish Bone.

There was once a king, and he had a Queen.

One day, the king was going to the office when he stopped at the fishmonger’s shop.

He needed to buy a pound and a half of salmon which the Queen had requested him to send home.

He had not proceeded far after finishing his shopping, when the fishmonger’s errand-boy came running after him.

He said, “Sir, you didn’t notice the old lady in our shop.

Now, the King had not seen any old lady because she had been invisible to him, though visible to the fishmonger’s boy.

Just then, the old lady came trotting up! She was dressed in shot-silk of the richest quality.

“King Watkins the first, I believe?” “Watkins,” replied the King, “is my name.”
“রাজা প্রথম ওয়াটকিন্স, আমি বিশ্বাস করি?” রাজা উত্তর দিলেন, “ ওয়াটকিন্স, আমার নাম।”
“Papa of the beautiful princess Alicia?” The old lady asked.
“সুন্দরী রাজকন্যা অ্যালিসিয়ার বাবা?” বুদ্ধা জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন।
“Yes,” King Watkins replied.
“হ্যাঁ,” রাজা ওয়াটকিন্স জবাব দিলেন।
“You are going to the office?” said the old lady.
“আপনি অফিসে যাচ্ছেন?” বৃদ্ধা বললেন।
It instantly flashed upon the king that she must be a Fairy, or how could she know that?

“You are right,” said the old lady, answering his thoughts, “I am the Good Fairy Grandmarina.

Days went by.
কিছুদিন কেটে গেল।
One morning, the King came into Alicia’s room.
একদিন সকালে রাজা এলিসিয়ার ঘরে ঢুকলেন।
He was sighing heavily, and seemed low spirited.
তিনি জোরে জোরে শ্বাসপ্রশ্বাস নিচ্ছিলেন, এবং তাকে মনমরা দেখাচ্ছিল।
He sat down miserably, leaning his head upon his hand, and his elbow upon the kitchen table.
দু’হাতের উপর মাথাটা রেখে এবং নিজের কনুইটি রান্নাঘরের টেবিলের উপরে রেখে তিনি অসহায়ভাবে বসে পড়লেন।
Alicia asked, “What is the matter, Papa?”
অ্যালিসিয়া জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন, “বাবা কী ব্যাপার?”
“I am extremely poor, my child,” the King replied.
“আমি অত্যন্ত গরিব, আমার সন্তান” রাজা জবাব দিলেন।
“Have you no money at all, Papa?” Alicia enquired.”

“None, my child.”
“কিছুই নেই, আমার বাছা।”
“Is there no way left of getting any, Papa?”
“বাবা এটি (টাকা) পাওয়ার কি কোন রাস্তা নেই?”
“No way,” said the King.
“কোনও উপায় নেই,” রাজা বললেন।
“I have tried very hard, and I have tried all ways.”
“আমি খুব চেষ্টা করেছি, এবং আমি সব দিক চেষ্টা করেছি।”
When she heard those last words, the princess Alicia began to put her hand into the pocket where she kept the magic fish-bone.

So she took out from her pocket the magic fish-bone that had been dried and rubbed and polished till it shone like mother-of-pearl.

She gave it a little kiss and wished it was salary day.

The King made her a shy bow.
রাজা তাকে লাজুকভাবে প্রণাম করলেন।
“It only remains,” said Grandmarina in conclusion, “to make an end to the fish-bone.”

So she took it from the hand of the princess Alicia, and it was instantly grabbed by the little snapping pug-dog next door!
