The Poet
William Wordsworth [1770-1850] was one of the greatest poets of nature. He was a major poet of the Romantic period. His greatest poems are The Prelude, The Daffodils, Tintern Abbey, London 1802, Ode to Duty, Upon Westminster Abbey etc. He spent his life in the Lake District of England. The present text is an edited version of his poem We are Seven.
উইলিয়াম ওয়ার্ডসওয়ার্থ [১৭৭০-১৮৫০] প্রকৃতির অন্যতম শ্রেষ্ঠ কবি ছিলেন। তিনি রোমান্টিক যুগের একজন প্রধান কবি ছিলেন। তাঁর সর্বশ্রেষ্ঠ কবিতাগুলি হল The Prelude, The Daffodils, Tintern Abbey, London 1802, Ode to Duty, Upon Westminster Abbey ইত্যাদি। তিনি তাঁর জীবন ইংল্যান্ডের লেক জেলায় কাটিয়েছেন। বর্তমান পাঠ্যটি তাঁর We are Seven কবিতার সম্পাদিত সংস্করণ।

A simple child,
একটি সরল শিশু,
That lightly draws its breath,
যে হালকাভাবে তার নিঃশ্বাস টানছে,
And feels its life in every limb,
এবং প্রতিটি অঙ্গে তার জীবন অনুভব করে,
What should it know of death?
মৃত্যু সম্পর্কে তার কী জানা উচিত?
I met a little cottage girl:
আমি একটি কুটিরের ছোটো মেয়ের সাথে দেখা হয়েছিলঃ
She was eight years old, she said
তার বয়স ছিল আট বছর, সে বলেছে
Her hair was thick with many a curl
তার চুল ছিল ঢেউখেলানো ঘন চুল
That clustered round her head.
যা তার মাথার ওপর জড়ো হয়ে আছে।
She had a rustic, woodland air
হাবভাব তার গ্রাম্য, বনের গন্ধমাখা
And she was wildly clad;
এবং সে ছিল বুনো পোশাক পরিহিতা;
Her eyes were fair, and very fair;
তার চোখ ছিল সুন্দর , খুবই সুন্দর;
-Her beauty made me glad.
– তার সৌন্দর্য আমাকে খুশি করেছিল।
“Sisters and brothers, little maid
“বোন ও ভাই মিলিয়ে, ছোট মেয়ে
How many may you be?”
তোমরা কয়জন হতে পার?”
“How many? Seven in all,” she said,
“কতজন? সাতজন,” সে বলল,
And wondering looked at me.
আর অবাক হয়ে আমার দিকে তাকাল।
And where are they? I pray you tell.”
এবং তারা কোথায়? আমি প্রার্থনা করছি তুমি বল।”
She answered, “Seven are we
সে বলল, “আমরা সাতজন
And two of us at Conway dwell
এবং কনওয়েতে আমদের দুজন বাস করি
And two are gone to sea.
এবং দু’জন সমুদ্রে চলে গেছে।
Two of us in the churchyard lie,
গীর্জার উঠোনে আমদের দুজন শুয়ে আছে,
My sister and my brother;
আমার বোন এবং আমার ভাই;
And in the churchyard cottage I
এবং গির্জার উঠোনের কুঁড়েঘরে আমি
Dwell near them with my mother.”
আমার মায়ের সাথে তাদের কাছাকাছি থাকি।”
“You say that two at Conway dwell,
“তুমি বলছ যে কনওয়েতে দুজন বাস করে,
And two are gone to sea,
এবং দু’জন সমুদ্রে চলে গেছে,
Yet ye are seven! – I pray you tell,
তবুও তোমরা সাতজন! – আমি প্রার্থনা করি তুমি বল,
Sweet maid, how this may be?”
মিষ্টি মেয়ে, এটক কেমন করে হতে পারে?”
Then did the little maid reply,
তারপরে ছোট মেয়েটি জবাব দিল,
“Seven boys and girls are we;
“সাতজন ছেলে-মেয়ে আমরা;
Two of us in the churchyard lie,
গীর্জার উঠোনে আমরা দুজন শুয়ে থাকি,
Beneath the churchyard tree.”
গির্জার উঠোনে গাছের নীচে।”
“You run about, my little maid,
“তুমি ছোটাছুটি কর, আমার ছোট মেয়ে,
Your limbs they are alive;
তোমার অঙ্গ প্রত্যঙ্গ, তারা জীবিত;
If two are in the churchyard laid,
দু’জন যদি গির্জার উঠোনে পড়ে থাকে,
Then ye are only five.”
তবে তোমরা শুধু পাঁচ জন”।
“Their graves are green, they may be seen,”
“তাদের কবর সবুজ, সেগুলি দেখা যেতে পারে,”
The little maid replied,
ছোট মেয়েটি জবাব দিল,
“Twelve steps or more from my mother’s door
“আমার মায়ের দরজা থেকে বারো ধাপ বা আরও বেশি দূরে
And they are side by side.
এবং তারা পাশাপাশি রয়েছে।
“How many are you then,” said I,
“তাহলে তোমরা কতজন,” আমি বললাম,
If they two are in heaven?”
তারা দুজন যদি স্বর্গে থাকে?”
Quick was the little maid’s reply,
দ্রুত ছিল মেয়েটির উত্তর,
“O master! We are seven.”
“হে মাস্টার! আমরা সাত জন।
“But they are dead; those two are dead!
“তবে তারা মারা গেছে; ওই দুজন মারা গেছে!
Their spirits are in heaven!”
তাদের আত্মা স্বর্গে আছে!”
‘Twas throwing words away; for still
“শব্দগুলো হেলাফেলা করে বলছে; তবুও
The little maid would have her will,
ছোট মেয়েটির হয়তো ইচ্ছাশক্তি ছিল,
And say, “Nay, we are seven!”
এবং বলে, “না, আমরা সাতজন!”

Ans: The girl doesn’t understand the meaning of death and she cannot differentiate dead from alive, that’s why she counted seven instead of five.
