About the Author and the Text:
The author, Rudyard Kipling, was a famous English short-story writer, poet, and novelist. He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1907. He is chiefly remembered for his stories for children. He was born in Bombay (now Mumbai) but grew up in England. His best-known stories are Kim, Just So Stories, The Jungle Book, etc. Mowgli Among the Wolves is abridged from a chapter of The Jungle Book.
লেখক রুডইয়ার্ড কিপলিং ছিলেন একজন বিখ্যাত ইংরেজী ছোট গল্পকার, কবি ও ঔপন্যাসিক। তিনি ১৯০৭ সালে সাহিত্যের জন্য নোবেল পুরষ্কার লাভ করেছিলেন। শিশুদের জন্য তাঁর গল্পের জন্য তিনি প্রধানত স্মরণীয়। তিনি বোম্বাইতে (বর্তমানে মুম্বাই) জন্মগ্রহণ করেছিলেন তবে বেড়ে ওঠেন ইংল্যান্ডে। তাঁর সুপরিচিত গল্পগুলির মধ্যে রয়েছে হল Kim, Just So Stories, The Jungle Book ইত্যাদি। Mowgli Among the Wolves হল The Jungle Book এর একটি অধ্যায়ের সংক্ষিপ্ত অংশ।

It was seven o’clock on a very warm evening in the Seeonee hills.
সীওনী পাহাড়ের খুব উষ্ণ সন্ধ্যায় সময় ছিল ৭ টা।
Father Wolf woke up from his day’s rest.
বাবা নেকড়ে তার দিনের বিশ্রাম থেকে জেগে উঠল।
He scratched himself, yawned, and spread out his paws one after the other to get rid of the sleepy feeling in their tips.
সে নিজেকে আঁচড় দিল, হাই তুলল, এবং একের পর এক তার থাবাগুলো ছড়িয়ে দিল, তাদের ডগায় লেগে থাকা ঘুম ঘুম ভাব কাটানোর জন্য।
Mother Wolf lay with her big grey nose dropped across her four tumbling, squealing cubs.

The moon shone into the mouth of the cave where they all lived.

“Augh!” said Father Wolf. “It is time to hunt again.”
“অগ্!” ফাদার নেকড়ে বলল। “এখন আবার শিকার করার সময় এসেছে।”
He was going to spring downhill when a little shadow with a bushy tail crossed the threshold and whined.
সে যখন পাহাড়ের নীচে ঝরনার দিকে যাচ্ছিল তখন একটি ছোট ছায়া ঝোপঝাড়ের মত লেজ নিয়ে চৌকাঠ পেরিয়ে গেল এবং গোঙাচ্ছিল।
“Good luck goes with you, O Chief of the wolves. And your noble children may never forget the hungry in this world.”

It was the jackal, Tabaqui.
এটি ছিল শিয়াল, তাবাকুই।
The wolves of India despise Tabaqui because he runs about making mischief, and telling tales, and eating rags and pieces of leather from the village rubbish heaps.
ভারতের নেকড়ে বাঘেরা তাবাকুইকে ঘৃণা করে কারণ সে দৌড়ে দুষ্টামি করে, গল্প শোনায়, এবং গ্রামের আবর্জনা-স্তুপ থেকে ছেঁড়া জামাকাপড় এবং চামড়ার টুকরো খায়।
But they are afraid of him too because Tabaqui, more than anyone else in the jungle is apt to go mad.

And then he runs through the forest biting everything in his way.

He sat cracking the end merrily.

Tabaqui sat still, rejoicing in the mischief that he had made, and then he said spitefully: “Sher Khan, the Big One, has shifted his hunting grounds. He will hunt among these hills for the next moon, so he has told me.”

Father Wolf listened, and below in the valley that ran down to the river, he heard the dry, angry, snarly whine of a tiger.

“Man!” said Father Wolf, showing all his white teeth. “Faugh! Are there not enough beetles and frogs in the tanks that he must eat man and on our ground too?”

Father Wolf ran out a few paces and heard Sher Khan muttering and mumbling savagely as he tumbled about in the scrub.
বাবা নেকড়ে দৌড়ে কয়েক পা এগিয়ে এল এবং শুনতে পেল শের খান হিংস্রভাবে অস্পষ্ট স্বরে বিড়বিড় করতে করতে ঝোপের মধ্যে গড়াগড়ি খাচ্ছে।
“The fool has had no more sense than to jump at a woodcutter’s campfire, and he has burnt his feet,” said Father Wolf with a grunt.
“ বোকাটার কোনো বোধবুদ্ধি নেই, কেউ কাঠুরের কাঠকুটো দিয়ে জ্বালানো আগুনের ওপর ঝাপিয়ে পরে, আর সে তার পা পুড়িয়ে ফেলেছে,” ঘোতঘোত শব্দ করে বাবা নেকড়ে বলল।
“Something is coming uphill,” said Mother Wolf, twitching one ear.

The bushes rustled a little, and Father Wolf got ready to leap.

Then, if you had been watching, you would have seen the most wonderful thing in the world.

The moonlight was blocked out of the mouth of the cave, for Sher Khan’s great square head and shoulders were thrust into the entrance.

“What does Sher Khan need?” said Father Wolf. “A man’s cub went this way. Its parents have run off,” demanded Sher Khan.

The tiger’s roar filled the cave with thunder.

Mother Wolf shook herself clear off the cubs and sprang forward.

Her eyes were like two green moons in the darkness, facing the blazing eyes of the tiger.
তার চোখ দুটি অন্ধকারে সবুজ চাঁদের মত, বাঘের জ্বলন্ত চোখের দিকে তাকিয়ে রইল।
Sher Khan might have faced Father Wolf, but he could not stand up against Mother Wolf.
শের খান বাবা নেকড়ের মুখোমুখি হয়তো হয়েছে , কিন্তু সে মা নেকড়ের বিরুদ্ধে দাঁড়াতে পারল না।
He knew that where she stood she had all the advantage of the ground, and would fight to death.

So he backed out of the cave mouth, growling.

“Assuredly I will keep him,” said Mother Wolf. “Lie still little frog. O you, Mowgli for Mowgli, the Frog, I will call you.
নিশ্চিতভাবেই আমি ওকে রাখব,” মা নেকড়ে বলল। “পুচকে ব্যাং চুপ করে শুয়ে থাক। ও তুই মোগলি – মোগলির জন্য মোগলি, ব্যাঙটি, আমি তোকে এই নামেই ডাকব।
The time will come when you will hunt Sher Khan as he has hunted you.”
“একদিন সময় আসবে যেদিন তুই শের খানকে শিকার করবি ঠিক যেভাবে শের খান তোকে শিকার করেছে।”
Akela, the great grey lone wolf, who led all the Pack by strength and cunning, layout at full length on his rock.
আকেলা, বিশালাকৃতির একাকী ধুসর নেকড়ে, যে তার শক্তি ও চাতুর্য দিয়ে পুরো দলটিকে চালায়, সে তার পাথরের ওপর পুরো শরীর মেলে শুয়েছিল।
“Who speaks for this cub?” said Akela. “Among the free people who speak”? There was no answer.
“কে এই বাচ্চাটার পক্ষ্যে কথা বলে?” আকেলা বলল। “মুক্ত স্বাধীন জীবদের মধ্যে কে কথা বলছে?” কোনো উত্তর এলো না।
Mother Wolf got ready for what she knew would be her last fight if things came to fighting.
মা নেকড়ে প্রস্তুত হতে লাগল যেটা সে জানত তার শেষ যুদ্ধ হতে পারে, যদি শেষ পর্যন্ত যুদ্ধের পরিস্থিতিতে পৌছায়।
Then the only other creature, who is allowed at the Pack Council, as Baloo the bear.

He rose upon his head and grunted: “I speak for the man’s cub. Let him run with the pack, and be entered with the others. I myself will teach him.”

A black shadow dropped down into the circle.

Everyone knew Bagheera and nobody dared to cross his path, for he was as cunning as a jackal, as bold as the buffalo and as reckless as a wounded elephant.
বাঘিরাকে সকলেই জানত এবং কেউ তার পঠে বাধা দিতে সাহস করত না, কারণ সে ছিল শেয়ালের মতো চতুর মহিষের মত সাহসী আর আহত হাতির মতোই বেপরোয়া।
But he had a voice as soft as wild honey dripping from a tree.

“Men and their cubs are very wise. He may be a help in time,” said Akela.
“মানুষ আর তাদের বাচ্চারা দারুন বুদ্ধিমান। অসময়ে সে আমাদের সহায় হতে পারে,” আকেলা বলল।
“Truly, a help in time of need; for none can hope to lead the pack forever,” said Bagheera.
“সত্যি, প্রয়োজনের সময়ে সাহায্য; কারণ কেউই তো চিরকাল দল চালানোর আশা করতে পারে না,” বাঘিরা বলল।
“Take him away,” Akela said to Father Wolf, “and train him as befits one of the free people.”
“ওকে নিয়ে যাও,” আকেলা বাবা নেকড়েকে বলল, “এবং স্বাধীন প্রাণীদের একজন হিসাবে যেন খাপ খায় তার প্রশিক্ষণ দাও।”
And that is how Mowgli was entered into the Seeonee wolf pack.

Ans: Akela was the leader of the wolves. He was a gray coloured lone wolf. He was very strong and cunning.
(f) Why do you think Akela wanted the ‘man cub’ to be in the wolf family?
Ans: Akela wanted the ‘man cub’ to be in the wolf family because he knew men and their cubs were very intelligent. So he might help them in time of need.
