Every free country has its own national flag. We have also national flag. It is a symbol of national unity and pride for the people of India. The flag is a horizontal rectangular tri-colour with three equal parts of saffron at the top, white in the middle, and dark green at the bottom. The saffron colour stands for bravery, sacrifice and the spirit of renunciation, and the white for peace and truth and the green for youth and energy. There is a wheel with 24 spokes in the centre of the white part, known as the Ashoka Chakra, which symbolizes the continuous progress and dharma of India. The flag was adopted on 22nd July 1947, a few days before India gained independence from the British rule. It is hoisted with great pride and respect on various national and cultural occasions.
