The Writer and The Story
Rasipuram Krishnaswami lyer Narayanswami (1906-2001) is one of the most widely read Indian writers in English. His famous works include Swami and Friends(1935), The English Teacher (1945), The Guide (1958). Apart from novels, Narayan displayed versatility as an author in his essays, short stories, memoirs and travel books.
রাসিপুরম কৃষ্ণস্বামী আইয়ার নারায়ণস্বামী (১৯০৬-২০০১) ইংরেজিতে সর্বাধিক পঠিত ভারতীয় লেখকদের একজন। তাঁর বিখ্যাত রচনাগুলির মধ্যে রয়েছে ‘Swami and Friends’ (1935), ‘The English Teacher’ (1945), ‘The Guide’ (1958)। উপন্যাসের পাশাপাশি নারায়ণ তাঁর প্রবন্ধ, ছোট গল্প, স্মৃতিকথা ও ভ্রমণমূলক গল্পে লেখক হিসাবে বহুমুখী প্রতিভা প্রদর্শন করেছেন।
Leela’s Friend is taken from R.K. Narayan’s popular short story collection The Malgudi Days. The story explores the issues of the interaction between different social classes, friendship and trust, prejudice and exploitation.

Sidda was hanging about the gate at a moment when Mr Sivasanker was standing in the front veranda of his house, brooding over the servant problem.
সিদ্ধা সদর দরজায় এমন সময়ে ঘোরাঘুরি করছিল যখন মিঃ শিবশঙ্কর তাঁর বাড়ির সামনের বারান্দায় দাড়িয়ে, চাকরদের সমস্যা নিয়ে গভীরভাবে চিন্তা করছিলেন।
“Sir, do you want a servant?” Sidda asked.
“মহাশয়, আপনার কি কোনো চাকর দরকার?” সিদ্ধা জিজ্ঞাসা করল।
“Come in,” said Mr Sivasanker.
“ভিতরে আস”, মিঃ শিবশঙ্কর বললেন।
As Sidda opened the gate and came in, Mr Sivasanker subjected him to a scrutiny and said to himself,
সিদ্ধা গেটটি খুলে ভিতরে আসতেই, মিঃ শিবশঙ্কর তাকে একটি পুঙ্খানুপুঙ্খ তদন্তের মুখোমুখি করলেন এবং নিজেকে বললেন,
“Doesn’t seem to be a bad sort …At any rate, the fellow looks tidy.”
“খারাপ বাছাই মনে হচ্ছে না … যাইহোক, লোকটাকে পরিচ্ছন্ন মনে হচ্ছে।”
“Where were you before?” he asked.
“তুমি আগে কোথায় ছিলে?” তিনি জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন।
Sidda said, “In a bungalow there,” and indicated a vague somewhere, “in the doctor’s house.”
সিদ্ধা বলল, “ওখানে একটি বাংলো বাড়িতে”, এবং অস্পষ্টভাবে কোনো একদিকে দেখিয়ে বলল, “ডাক্তারের বাড়িতে।”
“What is his name?”
“তার নাম কি?”
“I don’t know master,” Sidda said.”
“আমি চিনি না কর্তা,” সিদ্ধা বলল।
He lives near the market.”
“তিনি বাজারের কাছেই থাকেন।”
“Why did they send you away?”
“তারা তোমাকে কেন ছাড়িয়ে দিয়েছে?”
“They left the town, master,” Sidda said, giving the stock reply.
” তারা শহর ছেড়ে চলে গেছেন, কর্তা”, সে স্পষ্ট গোছানো উত্তর দিল।
Mr Sivasanker was unable to make up his mind.
মিঃ শিবশঙ্কর মনস্থির করতে পারছিলেন না।
He called his wife.
তিনি তার স্ত্রীকে ডাকলেন।
She looked at Sidda and said, “He doesn’t seem to me worse than the others we have had.”
তিনি (মিঃ শিবশঙ্করের স্ত্রী) সিদ্ধার দিকে তাকালেন এবং বললেন, “সে আমার কাছে আগে যে ছিল তার চেয়ে বেশি খারাপ বলে মনে হয় না।”
Leela, their five-year-old daughter, came out, looked at Sidda and gave a cry of joy.
লীলা, তাদের পাঁচ বছরের মেয়ে, বাইরে এল, সিদ্ধার দিকে তাকাল এবং আনন্দে চিৎকার করল।
“Oh Father!” she said, “I like him.
“ও বাবা!” সে বলল, ” আমার তাকে পছন্দ হয়েছে।”
Don’t send him away.
তাকে ছেড়ে দিও না।
Let us keep him in our house.”
চলো আমরা তাকে আমাদের বাড়িতে রাখি।”
And that decided it.
এবং এটাই সিদ্ধান্ত নেওয়া হল।
