About The Poet and the Poem :
Octavio Paz Lozano (1914-1998) was a Mexican writer of great renown from the twentieth century. The recurring thing of his poetry are philosophical speculation about the nature of time and love. Some of his famous works are The Sun Stone, The Bough and the Liar (1956), The Labyrinth of solitude (1963).
ওক্টাভিও পাজ লোজানো (১৯১৪-১৯৯৮) বিংশ শতাব্দীর একজন বিখ্যাত মেক্সিকান লেখক ছিলেন। তাঁর কবিতায় সময় এবং প্রেমের প্রকৃতি সম্পর্কে দার্শনিক জল্পনা বারবার এসেছে। তাঁর কয়েকটি বিখ্যাত রচনা হ’ল The Sun Stone, The Bough and the Liar (1956), The Labyrinth of solitude (1963)
In this poem of eight lines, the speaker conducts an inquiry upon the insignificance of man as compared to the vastness of the universe. Then a realization as to his inclusion in the general scheme of the universe dawns on the speaker. He realises the signification of the universal brotherhood of all beings in a scheme of celestial organisation.
আট লাইনের এই কবিতায় বক্তা মহাবিশ্বের বিশালতার তুলনায় মানুষের তুচ্ছতার বিষয়ে অনুসন্ধান করেছেন। তারপরে মহাবিশ্বের সাধারণ পরিকল্পনায় তাঁর অন্তর্ভুক্তি সম্পর্কে একটি উপলব্ধি বক্তার কাছে উপস্থিত হয়েছে। তিনি স্বর্গীয় প্রতিষ্ঠানের একটি পরিকল্পনায় সমস্ত মানুষের সর্বজনীন ভ্রাতৃত্বের স্বীকৃতি উপলব্ধি করেছেন।

আমি একজন মানুষ: খুব কম দিনই আমি বাঁচবো
and the night is enormous.
এবং রাত্রি সুবিশাল।
But I look up:
কিন্তু আমি উপরের দিকে তাকিয়ে দেখি:
the stars write.
নক্ষত্ররা লেখে।
Unknowing I understand:
না জেনেই আমি বুঝতে পারি:
I too am written,
আমাকেও লেখা হয়েছে,
and at this very moment
এবং ঠিক সেই মুহূর্তেই
someone spells me out.

I am a man: little do I last
And the night is enormous.
এই কবিতার বক্তা কবি নিজেই। তিনি বলছেন যে তিনি একজন মানুষ (মরনশীল) এবং এই মহাবিশ্বের সময় ও আয়তনের তুলনায় তার জীবনকাল খুবই সীমিত। তাই আপাতদৃষ্টিতে মনে হয় জীবন অর্থহীন। আবার অন্যদিকে রাত সুবিশাল। এখানে রাত প্রতীকী হিসাবে সুবিশাল মহাবিশ্বকে ইঙ্গিত করতে পারে। আবার অন্য দৃষ্টিকোণ থেকে জীবন যদি আলো হয়, তাহলে মৃত্যু হল অন্ধকার। তাই জীবন সীমিত হলেও মৃত্যু বা অন্ধকার অসীম, আমাদের ধরা ছোঁয়ার বাইরে।
But I look up:
the stars write.
কবি এখানে লাইনটি কিন্তু(but) দিয়ে শুরু করেছেন অর্থাৎ কবি এখন মানুষ জীবনের চিরন্তন সত্য জানার চেষ্টা করছেন। সাধারণ মানুষ যা করে থাকেন কবি তা না করে অন্যভাবে চিন্তাভাবনা করছেন। কবি আশাহত না হয়ে উপরে আকাশের দিকে নতুন আশা ও আকাঙ্ক্ষা নিয়ে তাকিয়ে দেখছেন। তিনি দেখতে পাচ্ছেন, আকাশের অমর তারারা তাদের নিজস্ব ভাষায় পৃথিবী ও তার সমস্ত জীব ও জড়দের অস্তিত্ব ও বিবর্তনের কাহিনি লিখছেন।
Unknowing I understand :
I too am written,
পৃথিবীর সাধারণ জ্ঞানে কবি জানতে পারেন না কিন্তু গভীর অন্তর্দৃষ্টিতে তিনি উপলব্ধি করতে পারেন যে এই পৃথিবীর সমস্তকিছুর মতো তার কথাও লেখা হয়েছে। এই মহাবিশ্বের সুর ও ছন্দে তিনিও একটি অংশ – তারও নাম রয়েছে।তাঁর কর্ম অনুসারে তাকে মূল্যায়ন করা হবে। কবি উপলব্ধি করতে পেরেছেন এই মহাবিশ্বের পিছনে রয়েছে এক অদৃশ্য শক্তি বা ঈশ্বর।
and at this very moment
someone spells me out.
কবি এখানে সেই মুহুর্তের কথা বলছেন যখন একজন মানুষ এই চিরন্তন সত্য উপলব্ধি করতে সক্ষম হয়েছেন। তাই যখনই কেউ কবির কবিতাটি পড়বেন, কবির প্রশংসা করবেন এবং তাঁকে ভালোভাবে ব্যাখ্যা করতে পারবেন।
