Gerald Malcolm Durrell (1925 -1995) was an English zookeeper(চিরিয়াখানার মালিক), conservationist (সংরক্ষণবাদী)and author. He founded (প্রতিষ্ঠা করেছেন) what is now called the “Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust” and the `Jersey Zoo’ (now Durrell Widilife Park) on the Channel Island of Jersey in 1958. He is perhaps (সম্ভবত) best remembered for writing a number of books based on his life as an animal enthusiast(উৎসাহী).

The following passage (অনুচ্ছেদ) is an extract (ছোটো অংশ) from Menagerie Manor by Gerald Durrell where the author talks about how he set up his own zoo in Jersey, helped by a team dedicated (নিবেদিত) to the cause of the animals. The extract describes a typical day in the zoo and the experience of the zoo-workers, and offers us an interesting insider’s view (অভ্যন্তরীণ দৃষ্টিভঙ্গী) of the zoo.

It is one thing to visit a zoo (চিরিয়াখানা) as an ordinary (সাধারণ) member of the public(জনসাধারণ). It is quite (সম্পুর্ণ) another thing to own a zoo and live in it. It certainly (অবশ্যই) enables (সমর্থ করে) you to rush out (ছুটে যাওয়া) at any hour of the day or night to observe (পর্যবেক্ষণ করা) the animals. It also means you are on duty (কর্তব্যরত) twenty four hours a day.

The average (মোটামুটি ভাবে) zoo day begins (শুরু হয়) just before dawn(ভোর). The sky will be slightly (হালকা) tinged (আভা) with yellow when you are awakened (জেগে উঠা) by the birdsong. You can hear a robin (বুলবুলি) singing. You hear the rich, fruity, slightly hoarse (কর্কশ) cries of the touracos (আফ্রিকার এক প্রকার পাখি) and a joyful (আহ্লাদিত) blackbird. As the last of his song dies, the white-headed thrush(থ্রাশ) bursts (ফেটে পড়ে) into an excited(উত্তেজিত) cry.
মোটামুটি ভাবে চিড়িয়াখানার দিন শুরু হয় ভোর হওয়ার ঠিক আগে। যখন তোমার ঘুম ভাঙবে, আকাশে তখন হলুদ রঙের আভা থাকবে। তুমি একটি বুলবুলি পাখির গান শুনতে পাবে। তুমি শুনতে পাবে টুরাকো পাখিদের দরাজ, রগরগে, সামান্য কর্কশ কান্না এবং একটি আহ্লাদিত ব্লাকবার্ড পাখির শব্দ। তার গানের শেষ রেশটুকু যেই না ফুরোয়, সাথে সাথে সাদা মাথার থ্রাশ উত্তেজিত চিৎকারে ফেটে পড়ে।
Looking out into the courtyard(আঙিনা) on the velvet (মখমল) green lawns (ঘাসে ঢাকা জমি) you can see an earnest (একাগ্র) group of peahens (ময়ূরী) searching the dewy (শিশির ভেঝা)grass. A male peahen is dancing, his burnished (চকচকে) tail raised like a fountain (ফোয়ারা) in the sunlight.

At eight o’clock the zoo staff arrives(আসে). You can hear them shout greetings(অভিবাদন,শুভেচ্ছা) to each other. Sounds made by their buckets (বালতি) and brushes are heard. You go out into the cool fresh morning to see if all is right with the zoo.
