The monkeys and other mammals live in the long, two-storied (দোতলা) granite house. Here you find a lot of activity(কার্যকলাপ). The gorillas have been let out of their cages (খাঁচা) while the cages are cleaned. They gallop (লাফালাফি করা) about on the floor with the high spirits (উদ্দীপনা) of children just out of school. They try to wrench (জোর করে মোচড়ানো) the electric heaters from their sockets, or break the fluorescent (জোড়ালো আলো উৎপাদনকারী) lights.

All the animals, excited (উত্তেজিত) and eager (উৎসুক) at the start of a new day, bustle (হৈচৈ করা) about the cages. Etam, the black Celebes ape, clings (ঝুলে থাকা) to the wire, baring his teeth at you in greeting(অভিবাদন).

You pass slowly down the house to the big cage at the end where the touracos now live. The male, Peety, I had reared while in West Africa. He peers (উঁকি মারা) at you from one of the higher perches(উচু ডাল). Then, if you call to him, he will fly down and land on a perch nearest to you. Then he will throw back his head and give a husky (ভাঙা স্বর)cry, “Caroo…Caroo… caroo… COO….Coo…coo…”.

At ten o’clock the zoo gates open and the first rush (ভিড়) of visitors arrive. As they come flooding into the grounds, everyone has to be alert(সতর্ক). This is not to ensure (নিশ্চিত করা) that the animals do not hurt the people, but to make sure that the people do not hurt the animals. If an animal is asleep(ঘুমে আচ্ছন্ন), they want to throw stones at it or prod (খোঁচা) it with sticks to make it move. We have found visitors trying to give the chimpanzees lighted (জলন্ত) cigarettes and razor blades(দাড়ি কামানের ব্লেড). The uncivilized (অসভ্য) behaviour (ব্যবহার) of some human beings in a zoo has to be seen to be believed.

Towards evening the visiting crowd thinned out(পাতলা হয়ে যায়). The slanting (তির্যক) rays (রশ্মি) of the sun light the cage where the crowned pigeons (নোটন পায়রা) live. As the light fades(কমে যায়), the robin (বুলবুলি) ceases (বন্ধ করা) to sing and flies off to roost (বিশ্রাম করতে) in the mimosa tree. The white-faced owls that have spent all day pretending (ভান) to be grey tree stumps (গাছের নিচের অংশ), now open large golden eyes.
সন্ধ্যার দিকে দর্শনার্থীদের ভির কমে আসে। সূর্যের তির্যক রশ্মি খাঁচাকে আলোকিত করে যেখানে নোটন পায়রাগুলি বাস করে। আলো ম্লান হওয়ার সাথে সাথে বুলবুলি গান গাওয়া বন্ধ করে দেয় এবং মিমোসা গাছে বিশ্রাম করতে উড়ে যায়। যে সাদা মুখের পেঁচাগুলো সারাদিন ধূসর গাছের গুঁড়ি হওয়ার ভান করে কাটিয়েছে, তারা এখন বড় বড় সোনালী চোখ খোলে।
Shadows are creeping (ধীরে ধীরে পতিত হচ্ছে) over the flower beds and rockery(শিলা উদ্যান). There is a sudden chorus (সমবেত) from the chimpanzee’s bedroom. You know they are quarrelling over who should have the straw(খড়).
ফুলের চাষের জমি এবং শিলা উদ্যানের উপর ছায়া ধীরে ধীরে পড়ছে। শিম্পাঞ্জির শোবার ঘর থেকে হঠাৎ সমবেত আওয়াজ শোনা যাচ্ছে। তুমি জান কার কাছে খড় রাখা উচিত তা নিয়ে তারা ঝগড়া করছে।
As you lie in bed, you watch through the window the moon separating(আলাদা) itself from the shadow (ছায়া) of the trees. You hear the lions cough. Soon it will be dawn (ভোর) and the chorus of birds will take over; the cold morning air will ring with song.
তুমি যখন বিছানায় শুয়ে থাক , তুমি জানালা দিয়ে দেখতে পাবে যে চাঁদটি গাছের ছায়া থেকে নিজেকে আলাদা করছে। তুমি সিংহের কাশি শুনতে পাবে। শীঘ্রই ভোর হবে এবং পাখিদের কিচিরমিচিরে ভরে যাবে ; সকালের শীতল বাতাস গানে মুখরিত হবে।
