The Author and the Text:
Douglas Bradbury (1920-2012) was one of the most celebrated (বিখ্যাত) American fiction (উপন্যাস) writers of the twentieth century. He wrote science fiction, fantasy(কল্পকাহিনি), horror (ভয়)and mystery (রহস্য) stories. His most famous stories are Fahrenheit 451, The Martian Chronicles, The Illustrated Man and It Came from Outer Space. Many of his works have been adapted (রুপান্তরিত) into comic (কৌতুক) books, television shows and films.

This text is an excerpt (অংশ) from a science fiction which gives us an imaginary (কাল্পনিক) account of life on the planet Venus(শুক্রগ্রহ). It touchingly (স্পর্শকাতর ভাবে) narrates the keen expectations (প্রত্যাশা) of the children of Venus who eagerly (আগ্রহের সাথে) wait for the sun to appear after seven years, but only for an hour. The deviation (বিচ্যুতি) of the text from what we know as scientific (বৈজ্ঞানিক) fact (ঘটনা) only adds to the imaginative (কাল্পনিক) element (উপাদান) of the tale.

It had been raining for seven years.
Thousands upon thousands of days filled from one end to the other with rain.The days were filled with the gush (স্রোত) of water and endless (অবিশ্রান্ত) showers(বৃষ্টি).
Heavy storms (ঝড়) caused tidal (জোয়ার) waves (ঢেউ) to come over the islands(দ্বীপ). A thousand forests crushed (বিধ্বস্ত হয়েছিল) under the rain, had grown up (বৃদ্ধি পেয়েছিল) a thousand times to be crushed again.

This was the way of life forever (চিরকাল) on planet Venus.Here was located the schoolroom of the children belonging to men and women who came by rockets (রকেট) from Earth.They set up a civilization (সভ্যতা) in this raining world.

The children were all nine years old.
When the sun came out last time seven years ago (পূর্বে) they were too young(ছোটো). They could not recall (মনে করা) the sun when it came out for just an hour and showed (দেখায়েছিল) its face to the stunned (স্তম্ভিত) world.
