His mother was the first he had asked in the morning, “Ammaji, where have the clouds gone?”
সকালে তাঁর মা প্রথম যাকে সে জিজ্ঞাসা করল, “আম্মাজি, মেঘ কোথায় গেছে?”
“Who’s gone where?” Ammaji said, as if he had asked an exceptionally stupid question.
“কে কোথায় গেছে?” আম্মাজি বললেন, যেন সে ব্যতিক্রমী একটি বোকা প্রশ্ন জিজ্ঞাসা করেছে।
“Clouds.”
“মেঘ”।
“Clouds! Have you lost your mind, boy? “
“মেঘ! তুমি কি তোমার বুদ্ধি হারিয়ে ফেলেছ, বাছা?
Hurry up, now.
তাড়াতাড়ি কর, এখন।
Wash quickly, eat your breakfast and go to school.”
দ্রুত পরিস্কার হও, তোমার প্রাতঃরাশ খেয়ে নাও আর স্কুলে যাও।”
Dejectedly, he washed his hands and face, ate his breakfast and left home.
মন ভার করে, সে হাত ও মুখ ধুয়ে নিল, প্রাতঃরাশ খেল এবং বাড়ি থেকে বেরিয়ে গেল।
But the question still haunted him: Where did the clouds go?
কিন্তু প্রশ্নটি এখনও তাকে তাড়া দিচ্ছিল: মেঘ কোথায় গেল?
He remembered what he had seen the night before-clouds gathering in the dark sky.
তার মনে পড়ে গেল আগের রাতের অন্ধকার আকাশে কী দেখেছে- আকাশে মেঘ পুঞ্জীভূত হচ্ছিল।
But when he went to sleep, the sky was clear and full of stars.
কিন্তু যখন সে ঘুমাতে গেল, আকাশ পরিষ্কার এবং তারায় পূর্ণ ছিল।
When he awoke again, he had no idea of the time.
আবার সে যখন জেগে উঠল, সময় সম্পর্কে তাঁর কোনও ধারণা ছিল না।
All he knew was that it was the middle of the night.
সে কেবল জানত যে এটি মধ্যরাত ছিল।
Up there in the sky, the clouds were rumbling.
আকাশে উপরে মেঘের গর্জন ছিল।
In the occasional flashes of lightning, they were dense and black.
মাঝে মাঝে বজ্রপাতের ঝলকে, তারা ঘন ও কালো ছিল।
It looked as if it will be raining.
দেখে মনে হচ্ছিল যেন বৃষ্টি হবে।
Rain will have ruined his sleep, he knew.
বৃষ্টি তার ঘুম নষ্ট করে দেবে, সে জানত।
When he got up in the morning, he was amazed.
সকালে সে যখন ঘুম থেকে উঠল, সে অবাক হয়ে গেল।
The sky was clear and empty! Not a trace of rain in the courtyard.
আকাশ পরিষ্কার আর খালি! উঠোনে বৃষ্টির একটু চিহ্নও নেই।
He was surprised and saddened—the clouds had moved across the skies without shedding a drop of rain.
সে অবাক হল এবং দুঃখ পেল— মেঘগুলো একফোঁটা বৃষ্টি না ছিটিয়েই আকাশের অন্যপ্রান্তে সরে গেছে।
And it saddened him to think that he had fallen asleep.
এবং সে ঘুমিয়ে পড়েছিল, এটা ভেবে তার দুঃখ হল।
Had he stayed awake, perhaps, the clouds would not have disappeared like that.
যদি সে জেগে থাকত, তবে সম্ভবত মেঘগুলো সেভাবে অদৃশ্য হয়ে যেত না।
It would have been the season’s first rainfall.
এটি এই মরশুমের প্রথম বৃষ্টিপাত হত।
The month of the rains was slipping away.
বৃষ্টির মাস কেটে যাচ্ছিল।
He looked up once again at the skies.
সে আবার একবার আকাশের দিকে তাকাল।
Not a single patch of cloud.
মেঘের একখন্ডও নেই।
The sun beat down on his head from a clear sky.
পরিষ্কার আকাশ থেকে রোদ তার মাথায় যন্ত্রণা দিচ্ছিল।
In the fierce heat, he walked between the fields.
প্রচণ্ড উত্তাপের মধ্যে সে মাঠের মধ্যে দিয়ে হাঁটল।
His body was on fire, his throat dry.
তাঁর শরীরে আগুনে পুড়ে যাচ্ছে, গলা শুকিয়ে গিয়েছিল।
After crossing several fields, he saw a large tree in whose shade a Persian wheel turned gently.
বেশ কয়েকটি মাঠ পেরিয়ে যাওয়ার পরে সে দেখতে পেল একটি বড় গাছ যার ছায়ায় একটি পারসিয়ান হুয়ীল ধীরে ধীরে ঘুরছিল।
It was like he had reached an oasis in the middle of a desert.
মনে হচ্ছিল মরুভূমির মাঝে সে একটি মরুদ্যানে পৌঁছেছে।
He reached the shelter of the tree and splashed the cool water from the Persian wheel on his dusty feet.
সে গাছের আশ্রয়ে পৌঁছে তার ধুলো ভর্তি পায়ে পারসিয়ান হুয়ীল থেকে শীতল জল ঢেলে দিল।
Then he washed his hands and face and drank his fill.
তারপর সে তার হাত ও মুখ ধুয়ে ফেলল এবং প্রাণভরে জল পান করল।

Ans: The boy splashed the cool water from the Persian wheel on his dusty feet. Then he washed his hands and face and drank his fill.
