Refreshed, he looked around.
সতেজ হয়ে সে চারদিকে তাকাল।
An old man sat on a wall by the Persian wheel.
একজন বয়স্ক লোক পারসিয়ান হুয়ীলের পাশে একটি দেওয়ালের উপর বসেছিল।
He looked at the old man, wanting to say something but hesitated.
সে বৃদ্ধ লোকটির দিকে তাকাল, কিছু বলতে চাইল কিন্তু ইতস্তত করল।
Finally, he asked, “Did the clouds come here?”
অবশেষে সে জিজ্ঞাসা করল, “মেঘ কি এখানে এসেছে?”
The old man looked closely at him and said, “Son, when the clouds come, the earth and the sky know of their coming.”
বৃদ্ধ লোকটি তার দিকে ভালো ভাবে তাকিয়ে বলল, “বাছা, মেঘ যখন আসে তখন পৃথিবী ও আকাশ তাদের আগমন সম্পর্কে জানতে পারে।”
“But the clouds were here last night and no one got to know.”
“তবে গতরাতে মেঘ এখানে ছিল এবং কেউ জানতে পারেনি।”
The old man said, “It is not enough for the clouds to come.
বৃদ্ধ লোকটি বললেন, “মেঘগুলির আসাটাই যথেষ্ট নয়।
I once lived in a place where it hadn’t rained for ten years.”
আমি একসময় এমন জায়গায় বাস করতাম যেখানে দশ বছর ধরে বৃষ্টি হয়নি।”
“Ten years?” He was open-mouthed.
“দশ বছর?” সে মুখ হাঁ-করে থাকল।
He sat there listening to his tales.
সেখানে সে তার গল্প শুনতে বসে পরল।
Suddenly, he realized how late it was.
হঠাৎ সে বুঝতে পারল কত দেরি হয়ে গেছে।
He walked for miles in the sun and dust.
সে রোদ ও ধূলিতে কয়েক মাইল হাঁটল।
He went back by the same dirt track he had taken to come there.
সে যে মাটির রাস্তা দিয়ে এসেছিল সেই রাস্তা দিয়েই ফিরে গেল।
The sun was still fiercely hot but when he reached the mud hut, he felt a nip in the air and the earth was damp underfoot.
রোদ তখনও প্রচণ্ড গরম কিন্তু যখন সে মাটির কুঁড়েঘরের কাছে পৌছালো, সে বাতাসে একটি ঠান্ডা ভাব অনুভব করল এবং পায়ের নীচের মাটি ভেজা ছিল।
As he neared his village, he saw the roads were wet.
যখন সে তার গ্রামের কাছাকাছি পৌছাল, সে দেখল রাস্তাগুলো ভিজে গেছে।
Trees that had been standing draped in layers of dust when he had left in the morning now looked freshly bathed.
সকাল বেলা সে যখন বেড়িয়েছিল তখন যে গাছগুলো ধুলার আস্তরণে মুড়ে দাঁড়িয়ে ছিল, এখন সতেজভাবে স্নান করানো মনে হচ্ছিল।
He felt a wave of happiness.
সে একটি সুখের ঢেউ অনুভব করল।
He hurried home.
সে তাড়াতাড়ি বাড়ি চলে গেল।
He wanted to see how fresh and clean the Jamun tree in his courtyard looked.
সে দেখতে চেয়েছে তার উঠানের জামুন গাছটি কতটা সতেজ এবং পরিষ্কার দেখাচ্ছে।
When he got home, he saw that the rain had changed everything.
যখন সে বাড়ি গেল, সে দেখল যে বৃষ্টি সবকিছু বদলে দিয়েছে।
The Jamun tree stood clean and scrubbed, freshly showered, and Ammaji was saying,” That was a good shower, thank God!”
জামুন গাছটি পরিষ্কার–ধৌত হয়ে দাঁড়িয়ে আছে, সতেজভাবে ধোয়া, আর আম্মাজি বললেন, “ভাল বৃষ্টিপাত হল, ঈশ্বরকে ধন্যবাদ!”
Raindrops were still rolling off the leaves of the Jamun.
বৃষ্টির ফোঁটাগুলো তখনও যামুনের পাতাগুলির উপর দিয়ে গড়িয়ে পড়ছে।
He stood beneath the tree and let them fall on his head and face.
সে গাছটির নীচে দাঁড়াল এবং সেগুলিকে (বৃষ্টির ফোঁটা) তার মাথা এবং মুখের উপর পড়তে দিল।
He raised his eyes to the sky and saw it clear, without even a wisp of cloud.
সে আকাশের দিকে চোখ তুলল এবং মেঘের কুঁচি ছাড়াই এটিকে পরিস্কার দেখল।
He had walked so far in the dust and sun in search of the clouds, and in his absence they had come, shed their rain and gone away!
সে মেঘের সন্ধানে ধূলো এবং রোদে অনেকদূর হেঁটেছে এবং তার অনুপস্থিতিতে তারা এসেছে, তাদের বৃষ্টি বর্ষণ করেছে এবং চলে গেছে!

Ans: The boy enjoyed the falling of raindrops on his head and face as he stood under the Jamun tree.
(d) Why did the clouds shed rain in the absence of the boy?
Ans: The clouds gathered in the sky and shed rain but the boy was not there at that time.
