About the Poet and the Poem:
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807- 1882) was an American writer from the nineteenth century well known for his lyric poems. A few of his famous works are Voices of the Night, Ballads and other poems, The Songs of Hiawatha.
The poem is written in rhyming couplets, continuing for nine lines. Longfellow traces the journey of the wind as it passes over land and ocean, ushering in fresh lively activities with daybreak.
হেনরি ওয়াডসওয়ার্থ লংফেলো উনবিংশ শতকের গীতি কবিতার জন্য জন্য বিখ্যাত একজন আমেরিকান লেখক। তাঁর বিখ্যাত রচনার কয়েকটি হল – ভয়েসেস অফ দ্য নাইট, ব্যলাডস এন্ড আদার পোয়েমস, দ্য সংস অফ হিয়াওয়াথা।
কবিতাটি নয়টি রাইমিং কপ্লেটস (দুই লাইনের অন্তমিল) এ লেখা। লংফেলো বাতাসের যাত্রাকে লক্ষ্য করেছেন যখন এটি স্থল ও সমূদ্রের উপর দিয়ে বয়ে গিয়ে দিনের সূচনায় নতুন প্রানবন্ত কাজকর্মের ঘোষণা করে।

A wind came up out of the sea,
And said, "O mists, make room for me."
It hailed the ships and cried, "Sail on,
Ye mariners, the night is gone."
And hurried landward far away,
Crying "Awake! it is the day."
It said unto the forest, "Shout!
Hang all your leafy banners out!"
It touched the wood-bird's folded wing,
And said, "O bird, awake and sing.
And o'er the farms, "O chanticleer,
Your clarion blow; the day is near."
It whispered to the fields of corn,
"Bow down, and hail the coming morn."
It shouted through the belfry-tower,
"Awake, O bell! proclaim the hour."
It crossed the churchyard with a sigh,
And said, "Not yet! In quiet lie."

সমূদ্র থেকে উত্থিত বাতাস কীভাবে পরিবেশের বিভিন্ন উপাদানের সাথে মিলিত হচ্ছে, তাই এখানে কবি সুন্দর ভাবে উত্থাপন করেছেন। লংফেলো এই কবিতায় বাতাসকে ব্যক্ত (personify) করেছেন এবং কবিতাটি সংলাপের আকারে উপস্থাপন করেছেন।
সমূদ্র থেকে বাতাসের উৎপত্তির পর একটি নতুন দিনের সূচনা ঘোষণা করার জন্য বাতাস স্থলভাগের দিকে ছুটে গেল। এটি নাবিকদের কাছে জানিয়ে দিল যে রাত আর নেই। এটি জঙ্গলের কাছে গিয়ে তার সমস্ত সৌন্দর্য মেলে ধরার আহ্বান জানাল। পাখিদের জাগিয়ে তুলল, তাদের গান গাওয়ার জন্য অনুরোধ করল। এটি ভুট্টা ক্ষেতে ফিসফিস করে খামারের উপর দিয়ে উড়ে গেল।
বাতাস বেলফ্রাই টাওয়ারের মধ্য দিয়ে চিৎকার করে ঘন্টা ঘোষণা করার জন্য ঘণ্টাটিকে জাগিয়ে তুলল। এটি চার্চের কাছে পৌঁছে জানাল, চুপ করে থাকার সময় এটি নয়।
