Ruskin Bond (1934 – ) is an Indian author of British descent. In 1992, he received the Sahitya Akademi Award for his short story collection, Our Trees Still Grow in Dehra. His famous works include Room On the Roof, A Flight of Pigeons, Angry River, The Blue Umbrella. The present text is an edited version of his short story Ghosts on the Verandah.

Anil’s mother’s memory was stored with an incredible amount of folklore, and she would sometimes astonish us with her stories of spirits and mischievous ghosts.
অনিলের মায়ের স্মৃতি অবিশ্বাস্য পরিমাণ লোককথায় পরিপূর্ণ ছিল এবং তিনি মাঝেমধ্যেই তার প্রেত ও অনিষ্টকারী ভূতের গল্প বলে আমাদের অবাক করে দিতেন।
One evening, when Anil’s father was out of town, and Kamal and I had been invited to stay the night at Anil’s upper-storey flat in the bazaar, his mother began to tell us about the various types of ghosts she had known.
একদিন সন্ধ্যায়, যখন অনিলের বাবা শহরের বাইরে ছিলেন, এবং কমল আর আমাকে রাতে অনিলদের বাজারের ভিতর উপরের তলার ফ্ল্যাটে থাকার জন্য আমন্ত্রণ জানানো হয়েছিল, তার মা বিভিন্ন ধরনের ভূতের গল্প বলা শুরু করলেন যেগুলি তিনি জানতেন।
Mulia, the maid– servant, having just taken a bath, came out on the verandah, with her hair loose.
মুলিয়া, পরিচারিকা মেয়ে সেই মাত্র স্নান সেরে বারান্দায় বেরিয়ে এসেছিল, খোলা চুলে।
“My girl, you ought not to leave your hair loose like that,” said Anil’s mother. “It is better to tie a knot in it.”
“বাছা আমার, ওই ভাবে খোলা চুলে থাকা তোমার উচিত নয়,” অনিলের মা বললেন। “চুলের মধ্যে গিট্ বেঁধে নেওয়াই ভালো।”
“But I have not oiled it yet,” said Mulia.
“কিন্তু আমি এখনও তো চুলে তেল দিইনি,” মুলিয়া বলল।
“Never mind, but you should not leave your hair loose towards sunset.
“কিছু মনে কর না , কিন্তু সূর্যাস্তের সময়ে তোমার ওই ভাবে চুল খুলে রাখা উচিৎ নয়।
There are spirits called Jinns who are attracted by long hair and pretty black eyes like yours.
জিন নামক একধরনের প্রেত আছে যারা তোমার মতো লম্বা চুল এবং সুন্দর কালো চোখের দেখে আকৃষ্ট হয়।
They may be tempted to carry you away!”
“ তারা হয়তো তোমাকে নিয়ে চলে যাওয়ার জন্য প্রলোভিত হতে পারে।”
“How dreadful!” exclaimed Mulia, hurriedly tying a knot in her hair, and going indoors to be on the safe side.
“কি ভয়ংকর!” মুলিয়া বিস্ময় প্রকাশ করে বলল, এবং তাড়াহুড়ো করে চুলে গিট দিয়ে নিরাপদে থাকতে ঘরের মধ্যে ঢুকে পড়ল।
Kamal, Anil and I sat on a string cot, facing Anil’s mother, who sat on another cot.
কমল, অনিল এবং আমি অনিলের মায়ের দিকে মুখ করে একটি খাটিয়াতে বসে ছিলাম, যিনি অন্য একটি খাটিয়ায় বসেছিলেন।
She was not much older than thirty-two, and had often been mistaken for Anil’s elder sister.

“Can you see Jinns, aunty?” I asked.

“There was a Mathematics teacher in our locality, whose pupils were about the same age as you.

One of the boys was very good at his lessons.
তাদের মধ্যে একটি ছেলে পড়াশোনায় খুব ভালো ছিল।
One day, while he sat at his desk in a corner of the classroom, the teacher asked him to fetch a book from the cupboard which stood at the far end of the room.
একদিন, ক্লাসরুমের এককোনে তার ডেস্কে যখন সে বসেছিল, শিক্ষক তাকে ঘরের দূরবর্তী প্রান্তে রাখা আলমারি থেকে একটা বই আনতে বললেন।
The boy, who felt lazy that morning, didn’t move from his seat.
ছেলেটি যে সেই সকালে অলস বোধ করছিল, তার আসন থেকে নড়ল না।
He merely stretched out his hand, took the book from the cupboard, and handed it to the teacher.
সে কেবল তার হাতটা বাড়াল, আলমারি থেকে বইটা নিল, এবং শিক্ষকের হাতে তুলে দিল।
Everyone was astonished, because the boy’s arm had stretched about four yards before touching the book!
সবাই অবাক হয়ে গেল, কারণ বইটিকে স্পর্শ করার আগে ছেলেটির হাতাটা প্রায় চার গজ প্রসারিত হয়েছিল!
They realised that he was a Jinn; that was the reason for his being so good at games and exercises which required great agility.”
তারা সবাই বুঝতে পারল যে সে আসলে এক জিন, আর এই কারণেই সে খেলাধুলায় এবং ব্যায়ামে এত ভালো যার জন্য দারুন চটপটে হওয়ার প্রয়োজন ছিল!”
“Well, I wish I was a Jinn,”said Anil. “Especially for volleyball matches.”
“বেশ, আমিও যদি একটা জিন হতে পারতাম”, অনিল বলল। “বিশেষ করে ভলিবল খেলার জন্য।”
Anil’s mother then told us about Munjia, a mischievous ghost who lives in lonely peepul trees.
অনিলের মা এরপর আমাদের মুঞ্জিয়ার কথা বললেন, এক অনিষ্টকারী ভূত যে একাকী অশ্বথ গাছে বাস করে।
When a Munjia is annoyed, he rushes out from his tree and upsets tongas, bullock-carts and cycles.
যখন কোনো মুঞ্জিয়া রেগে যায়, সে তার গাছ থেকে বেরিয়ে ছোটাছুটি করে এবং টাঙ্গা, গরুর গাড়ি, সাইকেল সমস্ত কিছু ওলট-পালট করে দেয়।
Even a bus is known to have been upset by a Munjia.
এমনকি এক মুঞ্জিয়া একটি বাসকেও উল্টে দিয়েছিল বলে শোনা যায়।
“If you are passing beneath a peepul tree at night,” warned Anil’s mother, “be careful not to yawn without covering your mouth or snapping your fingers in front of it.
“যদি তুমি রাত্রিবেলা কোনো অশ্বথ গাছের নিচ দিয়ে যাও”, অনিলের মা সতর্ক করলেন “সাবধান থাকবে, মুখ না ঢেকে বা মুখের সামনে আঙ্গুল দিয়ে আওয়াজ না করে হাই তুলবে না।
If you don’t remember to do that, the Munjia will jump down your throat and completely ruin your digestion!”
যদি তুমি এটা করতে ভুলে যাও, তাহলে মুঞ্জিয়া তোমার গলা দিয়ে লাফিয়ে নিচে নেমে যাবে এবং তোমার হজমশক্তি সম্পূর্ণভাবে নষ্ট করে দেবে।”
