In an attempt to change the subject, Kamal mentioned that a friend of his had found a snake in his bed one morning.

“Did he kill it?” asked Anil’s mother anxiously.
“সে কি ওটাকে মেরে ফেলেছিল?” অনিলের মা উদ্বিগ্ন হয়ে জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন।
“No, it slipped away,” said Kamal.
“না, ওটা পালিয়ে গেছে,” কমল বলল।
“Good,” she said. “It is lucky if you see a snake early in the morning.”
“ভালো,” তিনি বললেন। “ যদি তুমি খুব সকালে সাপ দেখতে পাও সেটা সৌভাগ্য।”
“It won’t bite you if you let it alone,” she said.
“ও তোমাকে কামড়াবেও না যদি তুমি ওকে একা ছেড়ে দাও,” তিনি বললেন।
By eleven o’clock, after we had finished our dinner and heard a few more ghost stories – including one about Anil’s grandmother, whose spirit paid the family a visit –
রাত্রি এগারটার সময়, আমাদের রাতের খাবার শেষ করার পরে এবং আরো কয়েকটা ভুতের গল্প শুনে – তার মধ্যে একটি অনিলের ঠাকুমা সম্বন্ধে, যাঁর আত্মা তাদের পরিবারকে একবার দেখা দিয়েছিল –
Kamal and I were most reluctant to leave the company on the verandah and retire to the room which had been set apart for us.
কমল আর আমি বারান্দার ওই সঙ্গ ছেড়ে এবং আমাদের জন্য যে ঘরটি আলাদাভাবে রাখা ছিল, সেখানে বিশ্রামে যেতে খুবই অনিছুক ছিলাম।
It did not make us feel any better to be told by Anil’s mother that we should recite certain magical verses to keep away the more mischievous spirits.
অনিলের মা অনিষ্টকারী আত্মাদের দুরে রাখার জন্য কিছু জাদুকরী মন্ত্র আমাদের আওড়াতে বলেছিলেন বটে, তবুও আমরা কোনো স্বস্তি অনুভব করতে পারিনি।
We tried one, which went – Bhoot, prêt, pisach, dana Chhoo mantar, sab nikal jana… which, roughly translated, means – Ghosts, spirits, goblins, sprites, Away you fly, don’t come tonight…
আমরা একটা চেষ্টা করেছিলাম, যেটা এরকম ছিল – ভূত, প্রেত, পিশাচ, দানা ছুমন্তর, সব নিকাল জানা…. যেটিকে মোটের ওপর অনুবাদ করলে এরকম দাঁড়ায় — ভূত, প্রেত, অপদেবতা, তোরা উড়ে যা, আজকে রাতে আসিস না …..
But the more we repeated the verse, the more uneasy we became, and when I got into bed (after carefully examining it for snakes), I couldn’t lie still, but kept twisting and turning and looking at the walls for moving shadows.
কিন্তু যত আমরা বারবার মন্ত্রটি বলছিলাম, তত আমাদের অস্বস্তি বাড়ছিল, আর যখন আমি বিছানায় গেলাম (সাপ আছে কিনা ভালোভাবে পরীক্ষা করার পর), আমি স্থির হয়ে শুতে পারছিলাম না, এপাশ-ওপাশ করছিলাম এবং দেওয়ালের মধ্যে চলন্ত ছায়া খোঁজার চেষ্টা করছিলাম।
Kamal attempted to raise our spirits by singing softly, but this only made the atmosphere more eerie.
কমল নিচু গলায় গান গেয়ে আমাদের মনোবল বাড়ানোর চেষ্টা করল, কিন্তু তা পরিবেশটাকে আরো ভুতুরে করে তুলল।
After a while we heard someone knocking on the door, and the voices of Anil and the maidservant.
কিছুক্ষণ পরে আমরা শুনতে পেলাম যে কেউ একজন দরজায় ধাক্কা মারছে, এবং অনিল ও পরিচারিকার গলার আওয়াজ শুনতে পেলাম।
Getting up and opening the door, I found them looking pale and anxious.
বিছানা থেকে উঠে এবং দরজা খুলে, আমি তাদেরকে একেবারে বিবর্ণ এবং উদবিগ্ন দেখলাম।
They, too, had succeeded in frightening themselves as a result of Anil’s mother’s stories.
তারাও অনিলের মায়ের গল্পের ফলে নিজেদেরকে ভয় পাওয়াতে সফল হয়েছিল।
“Are you all right?” asked Anil.
“তোমরা সব ঠিক আছো?” অনিল জিজ্ঞাসা করল।
“Wouldn’t you like to sleep in our part of the house? It might be safer. Mulia will help us to carry the beds across!
“ তুমি কি আমাদের ঘরের দিকে গিয়ে ঘুমাবে না? এটা বেশি নিরাপদ হতে পারে। বিছানাগুলো বয়ে নিয়ে যেতে মুলিয়া আমাদের সাহায্য করবে!”
“We’re quite all right,” protested Kamal and I, refusing to admit we were nervous;
“আমরা সম্পূর্ণ ঠিকই আছি,” কমল প্রতিবাদ করে বলল আর আমি স্বীকার করলাম না যে আমরা ভয়গ্রস্ত;
but we were hustled along to the other side of the flat as though a band of ghosts was conspiring against us.
কিন্তু আমাদেরকে তাড়াহুড়ো করে ফ্ল্যাটবাড়ির অন্য দিকে নিয়ে যাওয়া হল যেন একদল ভূত আমাদের বিরুদ্ধে ষড়যন্ত করছে।
Anil’s mother had been absent during all this activity but suddenly we heard her screaming from the direction of the room we had just left.

“Rusty and Kamal have disappeared!” she cried. “Their beds have gone, too!”
“রাস্তি ও কমল উধাও হয়ে গেছে!” তিনি চিৎকার করে বললেন।” ওদের বিছানাপত্রও নেই!”
And then, when she came out on the verandah and saw us dashing about in our pyjamas, she gave another scream and collapsed on a cot.

After that, we didn’t allow Anil’s mother to tell us ghost stories at night.
