About The Author and The Text:

Oscar Fingal O’Flaherty Wills Wilde (1854-1900) was an Irish writer, poet, and playwright. The Importance of Being Earnest is one of his most popular plays. He also wrote many short stories like The Selfish Giant, The Happy Prince, The Model Millionaire and so on. The present text has been dramatized from his famous story The Happy Prince.

[Curtain goes up.(পর্দা উঠে যায়।) In deep centre stage a high and large square box looking like a pedestal is placed.(মঞ্চের মাঝখানে বেদীর মতো দেখতে একটি উচু এবং বড় চতুর্ভুজাকৃতির বাক্স রাখা আছে।) Upon the box stands the Happy Prince.(বাক্সের উপরে হ্যাপি পিন্স দাঁড়িয়ে আছে।) He stands stiffly resembling a statue. (সে দৃঢ় ভাবে মূর্তির মতো দাঁড়িয়ে আছে।)A statue is what the Happy Prince is. (হ্যাপি প্রিন্স হল একটি মূর্তি।) He is wearing a golden tunic and stands still with legs apart, his hands resting on the hilt of a sword whose tip rests on the pedestal-shaped box. (সে একটি সোনার টিউনিক(ঢিলেঢালা পোশাক) পরেছেএবং পা দু’টি আলাদা করে দাঁড়িয়ে আছে, তাঁর হাতগুলি একটি তলোয়ার-এর হাতলের উপরে রয়েছে, যার ডগাটি বেদীর মতো দেখতে বাক্সের উপরে ঠেকে রয়েছে। A large red stone is fixed on the side of the hilt. (তলোয়ারটির হাতলের ধারে একটি বড় লাল পাথর লাগানো আছে।) The open eyes of the Happy Prince are individually covered with blue coloured paper cut in the shape of the eye and lightly glued to hold them in place. Student 1: So this is the famous statue of Happy Prince. (প্রথম ছাত্রঃ তাহলে এটিই হল হ্যাপি প্রিন্সের বিখ্যাত মূর্তি।)

[They pause and gather admiringly around the statue of the Happy Prince.(তারা থামে এবং হ্যাপি প্রিন্সের মূর্তির চারপাশে প্রশংসাপূর্ণ ভাবে জড়ো হয়।)]

Student 2: He is very well known in this land. (দ্বিতীয় ছাত্রঃ সে এই দেশে খুবই সুপরিচিত।) Happy Prince lived in the wonderful palace of Sans-Souci. (হ্যাপি প্রিন্স সানস- সৌসির সুন্দর প্রাসাদে বাস করত।) During the day, he played with his friends in the palace garden.( দিনের বেলা সে তার বন্ধুদের সাথে প্রাসাদের বাগানে খেলাধুলা করত।) By night, he sang and laughed. (রাত্রে,  সে গান করত এবং হাসত।) He had no idea about the people of this world who live outside his palace.( রাজপ্রাসাদের বাইরে যারা থাকত, সেই সম্পর্কে তার কোনো ধারণা ছিল না।)

Student 1: You mean he never felt sad?(প্রথম ছাত্রঃ তুমি বলছ সে কখনই দুঃখ বোধ করেনি?)

Student 2: Nothing sad ever entered the door of the prince’s palace. (দ্বিতীয় ছাত্রঃ রাজপুত্রের প্রাসাদের দরজা দিয়ে কখনও কোনো দুঃখ প্রবেশ করেনি।) Everyone called him the Happy Prince and when he died, the town built this statue and named it the same. (প্রত্যেকে তাকে হ্যাপি প্রিন্স বলে ডাকত এবং যখন সে মারা যায়, শহরে এই মূর্তিটি তৈরি করা হয়েছিল এবং এটির একই নাম দেওয়া হয়েছিল।)

Student 3: The Happy Prince is built with gold from head to foot. (তৃতীয় ছাত্রঃ এই হ্যাপি প্রিন্স মাথা থেকে পা পর্যন্ত সোনা দিয়ে তৈরি।) His eyes are two precious sapphires and there is a big red ruby on his sword hilt. Student 2: In this town, everyone loves the Happy Prince.(দ্বিতীয় ছাত্রঃ এই শহরে, প্রত্যেকেই হ্যাপি প্রিন্সকে ভালবাসে।)

[They go out. (তারা বাইরে যায়।) A sad, tired-looking man immediately enters the stage from the right.(একজন দু:খী, ক্লান্ত চেহারার লোক ডান দিক থেকে তৎক্ষণাৎ মঞ্চে প্রবেশ করে।) He limps down with an unhappy expression. (সে একটি অসন্তুষ্ট অভিব্যক্তি নিয়ে খুড়িয়ে খুড়িয়ে হাঁটতে থাকে।) He stops before the statue of the Happy Prince and looks unhappily for three seconds.( সে হ্যাপি প্রিন্সের মূর্তির সামনে দাঁড়ায় এবং তিন সেকেন্ডের জন্য অসুখীভাবে দেখে।) He starts limping towards the left wing exit, muttering loudly to himself. [The sad, tired man goes out through the left wing exit.(দুঃখী, ক্লান্ত মানুষটি বাম দিকের প্রস্থানের রাস্তা দিয়ে বেরিয়ে যায়।) Immediately from the left wing emerges a young mother dragging her little boy by the hand. (বাম দিক থেকে তৎক্ষণাৎ এক যুবতী মা তার ছোট ছেলেটিকে হাত ধরে টানতে টানতে নিয়ে আসে।) The boy is crying. (ছেলেটি কাঁদছে।) Mother is trying to stop the boy from crying. (মা ছেলেটির কান্না থামাতে চাইছে।) They reach the statue of the Happy Prince. (তারা হ্যাপি প্রিন্সের মূর্তির কাছে পৌঁছোয়।) Mother speaks while walking.(মা হাঁটার সময় কথা বলতে থাকে।]

Young mother: I can’t understand why you keep crying! (যুবতী মাঃ আমি বুঝতে পারছি না তুমি কেন কেঁদেই চলেছ!) Why can’t you be happy? (তুমি কেন খুশি হতে পার না?) The Happy Prince never cries for new things.(হ্যাপি প্রিন্স কখনও নতুন জিনিসের জন্য কান্নাকাটি করে না।)

[Mother and son go out through the left-wing exit.( মা এবং ছেলে বাম দিকের প্রস্থান দরজা দিয়ে বাইরে বেরিয়ে যায়।) The stage light changes to blue. (মঞ্চের আলো বদলে নীল হয়।) The twittering call of a bird is heard in the background. (একটি পাখির কিচিরমিচির ডাক শোনা যায় পটভূমিতে।) Swallow, the bird, dressed in a black tunic, cardboard wings attached to its back, enters stage from the right, joyously tripping. (সোয়ালো পাখিটি, একটি কালো ঢিলেঢালা পোশাক পরে, পিঠের সাথে যুক্ত কার্ডবোর্ডের ডানাগুলি সহ ডান দিক থেকে আনন্দের সাথে ছোট ছোট পায়ে নেচে নেচে মঞ্চে প্রবেশ করে।) The Swallow flaps its hands quickly to indicate flying. Swallow: It’s much too cold here (সোয়ালোঃ এখানে অনেক বেশি ঠান্ডা।) All my friends have left for warm Egypt.(আমার সমস্ত বন্ধুরা উষ্ণ মিশরে চলে গেছে।) I too must fly. (আমাকেও উড়ে যেতে হবে।) But tonight I will rest in this unknown town. (তবে আজ রাতে আমি এই অচেনা শহরে বিশ্রাম করব।) The shelter between the feet of this golden statue looks good enough.(এই সোনার মূর্তির পায়ের মাঝের আশ্রয়টি যথেষ্ট ভাল দেখাচ্ছে।)

[The Swallow perches on the pedestal shaped box, holding a leg of the statue and resting his head against it. (সোয়ালো বেদীর আকৃতির বাক্সে বসে মূর্তির একটি পা ধরে এবং এর উপর  তার মাথা রাখে।) Swallow jerks and jumps up suddenly after five seconds.(সোয়াল ঝাঁকুনি দেয় এবং পাঁচ সেকেন্ড পরে হঠাৎ লাফ দিয়ে উঠে পড়ে।)]

Swallow: I thought this golden room was good shelter. (সোয়ালোঃ আমি ভেবেছিলাম এই সোনার ঘরটি ভাল আশ্রয়স্থল।) But I’m getting wet in the rain.(কিন্তু আমি বৃষ্টিতে ভিজে যাচ্ছি।)

[The Swallow sticks its neck out and looks upwards. (সোয়ালো তার গলা বাড়িয়ে দিল এবং উপরের দিকে তাকায়।) He looks puzzled.(তাকে হতভম্ব হয়ে গেল)]

Swallow: And yet, the sky is clear. It’s not raining. (সোয়ালোঃ এবং এখনও, আকাশ পরিষ্কার। বৃষ্টি হচ্ছে না।)

Statue: I’m the Happy Prince. (মূর্তিঃ আমি সুখী রাজপুত্র।) I spent my life in a palace. [The Swallow plucks the other sapphire from the prince’s eye.( সোয়ালোটি রাজপুত্রের চোখ থেকে অন্য নীলকান্ত মণিটি টেনে তুলে নিয়ে যায়।) He goes to the cardboard cottage and removes the curtain. (সে কার্ডবোর্ডের কুঁড়েঘরটির দিকে যায় এবং পর্দা সরিয়ে দেয়।) A little girl is discovered weeping inside. (একটি ছোট্ট মেয়েকে কাঁদতে দেখা গেল।) The Swallow flaps its arms and goes in.(সোয়ালোটি তার দু’হাত ঝাপটায় এবং ভিতরে প্রবেশ করে।) He drops the sapphire into the girl’s hand.(সে মেয়েটির হাতে নীলকান্ত মণিটি ফেলে দেয়।)]
