A tiger was caught in a storm.
একটি বাঘ ঝড়ের কবলে পড়েছিল।
He had wandered near the village, looking for something to eat.
সে গ্রামের কাছে কিছু খাবারের খোঁজে ঘুরে বেড়াচ্ছিল।
On the outskirts of that village lived an ill-tempered old woman.
সেই গ্রামের প্রান্তভাগে এক বদমেজাজী বৃদ্ধ মহিলা থাকতেন।
The tiger huddled in shelter close to the wall of the woman’s hut.
বাঘটি মহিলাটির কুঁড়েঘরের প্রাচীরের কাছে গুটিসুটি হয়ে আশ্রয় নিয়েছিল।
The old woman was feeling very ill-tempered that night.
বৃদ্ধ মহিলাটি সেদিন খুব বিরক্তবোধ করছিলেন।
The rainwater was leaking through the roof.
ছাদ দিয়ে বৃষ্টির জল গলে পড়ছিল।
“There is no escape from this drip-drip”, she muttered angrily, pushing her bed around the room to keep it dry.
“এই টপ-টপ থেকে নিস্তার নেই”, তার বিছানাটি শুকনো রাখার জন্য ঘরের চারপাশে ঠেলাঠেলি করতে করতে রাগে বিড়বিড় করছিলেন।
She shoved the bed and a tin trunk against a wall.
তিনি বিছানা এবং একটি টিনের বাক্স দেয়ালের দিকে ঠেলে দিলেন।
The wall shook.
দেয়ালটি কেঁপে উঠল।
“This drip-drip will be the death of me! “she shouted.
“এই টপ-টপেই আমার মৃত্যু হবে!” তিনি চিৎকার করে উঠলেন।
The tiger on the opposite side of the wall felt the wall shake and was frightened.
প্রাচীরের বিপরীত দিকে বাঘটি প্রাচীরের কম্পন অনুভব করল এবং ভয় পেয়ে গেল।
“The drip-drip must be a very dreadful creature,” he thought.
“টপ-টপ নিশ্চয়ই একটি খুব ভয়ঙ্কর প্রাণী হবে,” সে ভাবল।
Meanwhile, Bholenath, the potter, was out in the night, looking for his donkey in the storm.
এদিকে কুমোর ভোলানাথ রাতে বাইরে বেড়িয়ে ঝড়ের মধ্যে তার গাধাটির খোঁজ করছিল।
Suddenly he saw an animal huddled in the dark against the wall of the woman’s hut.
হঠাৎ সে দেখতে পেল অন্ধকারে একটি প্রাণী মহিলাটির কুঁড়েঘরের দেয়ালের বিপরীতে গুটিসুটি হয়ে বসে আছে।

“There is my donkey!” Bholenath shouted, and running to the tiger, grabbed it.
“ঐ তো আমার গাধা!” ভোলেনাথ চিৎকার করে ছুটে এসে বাঘটিকে জড়িয়ে ধরল।
He pulled the tiger’s ears.
সে বাঘের কান ধরে টানল।
“Move, you lazy donkey, or I will give you a hard time!”
“চল, অলস গাধা, নাহলে আমি তোকে একটি কঠিন শাস্তি দেব!”
The tiger was really frightened.
বাঘটি সত্যিই ভয় পেয়ে গেল।
“This must be the terrible drip-drip!” He thought.
“এটি অবশ্যই ভয়ঙ্কর টপ-টপ!” সে ভাবল।
Bholenath dragged the tiger home and kept him tied by a sturdy rope to a tree near his hut.
ভোলেনাথ বাঘটাকে বাড়িতে টেনে নিয়ে গেল এবং একটি শক্ত দড়ি দিয়ে তাকে তার কুঁড়েঘরের কাছে একটি গাছে বেঁধে রাখল।
In the morning, Bholenath’s wife discovered the tiger tied to the tree and screamed in fear.
সকালে ভোলেনাথের স্ত্রী গাছটিতে বাঁধা বাঘটি দেখতে পেল এবং ভয়ে চিৎকার করে উঠল।
Hearing her, the neighbours came running out of their huts.
তার চিত্কার শুনে প্রতিবেশীরা তাদের কুঁড়েঘর থেকে ছুটে এল।
Bholenath was sleeping.
ভোলেনাথ ঘুমাচ্ছিল।
He came out, too.
সেও বাইরে বেরিয়ে এল।
The people were all mystified.
লোকেরা সবাই হতভম্ব হয়ে গিয়েছিল।
“Who tied this tiger to the tree?” They asked.
“এই বাঘটাকে কে গাছের সাথে বেঁধেছে?” তারা জিজ্ঞাসা করল।
A neighbour said, “I think Bholenath can tell us. I saw him last night dragging an animal through the storm.”
এক প্রতিবেশী বলল, “আমার মনে হয় ভোলেনাথ আমাদের বলতে পারে। গত রাতে আমি তাকে ঝড়ের মধ্যে দিয়ে একটি প্রাণীকে টেনে নিয়ে যেতে দেখেছি।”
Bholenath was too frightened to admit his mistake.
ভোলেনাথ এত ভয় পেয়েছে যে নিজের ভুল স্বীকার করল না।
Everyone looked questioningly at Bholenath.
সকলেই ভোলানাথের দিকে প্রশ্নবিদ্ধভাবে তাকাল।
In the meantime, the tiger, disturbed and confused by all the people, had chewed through the rope.
এরই মধ্যে, বাঘটি, সমস্ত লোকের দ্বারা বিচলিত এবং বিভ্রান্ত হয়ে দড়িটি চিবিয়েছিল।
It ran away to the jungle.
এটি দৌড়ে জঙ্গলে চলে গেল।
The villagers were relieved.
গ্রামবাসীরা স্বস্তি পেল।
Bholenath now saw an opportunity to brag.
ভোলেনাথ এখন বড়াই করার একটা সুযোগ পেল।
“It is I who captured the tiger last night. I even pulled its ears,”
“আমিই গতকাল রাতে বাঘটিকে ধরেছিলাম। এমনকি আমি তার কানও টেনেছিলাম,”
Bholenath announced proudly.
ভোলানাথ গর্ব করে ঘোষণা করল।
Everyone marvelled at his bravery.
প্রত্যেকেই তাঁর সাহসিকতায় আশ্চর্য হয়ে গেল।
Soon the news of Bholenath’s bravery reached the king.
শীঘ্রই ভোলেনাথের বীরত্বের খবর রাজার কাছে পৌঁছে গেল।
The king was highly impressed.
রাজা অত্যন্ত মুগ্ধ হয়েছিলেন।
He made Bholenath the Commander-in-chief of the king’s army.
তিনি ভোলেনাথকে রাজার সৈন্য বাহিনীর সর্বাধিনায়ক করলেন।
Bholenath and his wife were given a huge house to live in.

A few months after that evening, news came that a neighbouring king has declared war.
সেই সন্ধ্যার কয়েক মাস পরে, খবর এল যে প্রতিবেশী রাজা যুদ্ধ ঘোষণা করেছেন।
Bholenath and his king gathered at the royal court.
ভোলেনাথ ও তার রাজা রাজদরবারে জড়ো হলেন।
The king told Bholenath, “You are the Commander-in-chief of my army.
রাজা ভোলেনাথকে বললেন, “আপনি আমার সেনাবাহিনীর সর্বাধিনায়ক।
I entrust you with the duty of protecting my state.”
আমি আপনাকে আমার রাষ্ট্র রক্ষার দায়িত্ব অর্পণ করলাম। “
Bholenath came back home in utter despair.
ভোলেনাথ ভীষণ হতাশ হয়ে ঘরে ফিরে এল।
“I don’t even know how to ride a horse”, he told his wife helplessly, “How will I defend our borders against eight thousand enemy soldiers?”
“আমি ঘোড়ায় চড়তেও জানি না”, সে তার স্ত্রীকে অসহায় হয়ে বলল, “আমি কীভাবে আট হাজার শত্রু সৈন্যের বিরুদ্ধে আমাদের সীমান্ত রক্ষা করব?”
“Don’t worry,” his wife said, “I’ll tie you to the horse.”
“চিন্তা করবে না,” তার স্ত্রী বলল, “আমি তোমাকে ঘোড়ার সাথে বেঁধে দেব।”
In the morning, the king sent Bholenath a magnificent stallion.
সকালে রাজা ভোলেনাথকে একটি দুর্দান্ত পুরুষ ঘোড়া প্রেরণ করলেন।
Bholenath got up glumly on the horse and his wife securely tied him to it with a rope.
ভোলেনাথ ভগ্নহৃদয়ে ঘোড়ায় উঠল এবং তার স্ত্রী তাকে নিরাপদে দড়ির সাথে বেঁধে দিল।
The horse did not like the feel of the tight ropes.
ঘোড়াটি শক্ত দড়িগুলির স্পর্শ পছন্দ করল না।
It reared suddenly and galloped off wildly.
এটি হঠাৎ পিছিয়ে গেল এবং পাগলের মতো দ্রুত এগিয়ে গেল।
Bholenath hung desperately to its mane.
ভোলেনাথ তার কেশর ধারে মরিয়া ভাবে ঝুলতে লাগল।
Realising that the horse was headed straight for the enemy camp, Bholenath shouted in fear.
ঘোড়াটি সরাসরি শত্রু শিবিরের দিকে এগিয়ে যাচ্ছে বুঝতে পেরে ভোলেনাথ ভয়ে চিৎকার শুরু করল।
The horse could not be stopped.
ঘোড়াটিকে থামানো গেল না।
Bholenath noticed a large tree with its branches hanging over the road.
ভোলেনাথ লক্ষ্য করল একটি বড় গাছের ডালগুলি রাস্তায় ঝুলছে।
As the horse galloped under the tree, Bholenath reached up to grasp the branches and pull himself free.
ঘোড়া গাছের নিচে দৌড়ে যাওয়ার সাথে সাথে ভোলানাথ ডালগুলি আঁকড়ে ধরল এবং নিজেকে মুক্ত করার চেষ্টা করল।
But the branches broke away in his hands.
কিন্তু ডালগুলি তার হাতে ভেঙে গেল।
The horse had entered the enemy camp.
ঘোড়াটি শত্রু শিবিরে প্রবেশ করল।
The enemy soldiers were astonished to see a wild-looking man tied to a fierce stallion, waving branches excitedly.
শত্রু সৈন্যরা একটি ভয়ংকর পুরুষ ঘোড়ায় বাঁধা বন্য চেহারার মানুষের উত্তেজিত ভাবে ডালপালা নাড়ানো দেখে অবাক হয়ে গেল।
“Help, help!” Bholenath was shouting.
“সাহায্য কর, সাহায্য কর!” ভোলেনাথ চিৎকার করতে লাগল।
The enemy soldiers did not hear him.
শত্রু সৈন্যরা তার কথা শুনতে পেল না।
They were greatly scared.
তারা ভীষণ ভয় পেল।
“This must be some great warrior come single-handedly to defeat us!”
“এটি অবশ্যই কোনো মহান যোদ্ধা আমাদেরকে পরাজিত করতে একাই আসছে!”
The soldiers were overcome with fear and instantly ran away without putting up a fight.
ভয় সৈন্যদের গ্রাস করে ফেলল এবং যুদ্ধ না করেই তৎক্ষনাৎ পালিয়ে গেল।
Soon the news of Bholenath’s great victory spread.
শীঘ্রই ভোলেনাথের দুর্দান্ত বিজয়ের খবর ছড়িয়ে পড়ল।
Everyone was amazed that he had defended his state all by himself against eight thousand enemy soldiers.
প্রত্যেকে আশ্চর্য হয়ে গেল যে আট হাজার শত্রু সৈন্যের বিরুদ্ধে সে একাই রাষ্ট্রটিকে রক্ষা করেছে।
The king awarded him in a public ceremony.
