The Author and Text:
Mulk Raj Anand (1905 -2004) was a prolific (প্রখ্যাত) writer who earned (অর্জন করেছিলেন) great admiration (খ্যাতি) for his short stories and novels like ‘Coolie’, ‘Untouchable’, ‘The Village, etc. where he depicted (ফুটিয়ে তুলেছেন) the lives of the poorer castes (বর্ণ) in traditional (ঐতিহ্যবাহী) Indian society(সমাজ).
মুল্ক রাজ আনন্দ (১৯০৫ – ২০০৪) ছিলেন একজন প্রখ্যাত লেখক যিনি ‘কুলি’, ‘আনটাচেবল’, ‘দ্য ভিলেজ’ ইত্যাদির মতো তাঁর ছোট গল্প ও উপন্যাসের জন্য প্রশংসা অর্জন করেছিলেন যেখানে তিনি ঐতিহ্যবাহী ভারতীয় সমাজে দরিদ্র বর্ণের মানুষের জীবনে চিত্র ফুটিয়ে তুলেছেন।
This text, an abridged (সংক্ষিপ্ত) version of his story of the same name, presents an apparently (আপাতদৃষ্টিতে) funny situation (পরিস্থিতি) where a businessman has his beloved (প্রিয়) cap seized (ছিনিয়ে নিয়েছিল) by a monkey, and finally (অবশেষে) gets it back by offering the offending (দোষী) monkey a bunch of bananas. Though the tone of the story is lighthearted(হালকা), the author notes with sad concern (উদ্বেগ) the unkind (নির্দয়) and unjust (অন্যায়) behavior (আচরণ) of the businessman (ব্যবসায়ী) towards the poor fruit-vendor who had helped him to get back his cap.
