About the Author and the Text:
William Somerset Maugham (1874-1965) was a British playwright, novelist, and short-story writer. During and after the wars, he travelled to India and South East Asia. Of Human Bondage is regarded as Maugham’s most important novel. His other important works include The Razor’s Edge, The Moon, and Sixpence etc. The present text is an adapted version of his short story of the same name.
উইলিয়াম সমারসেট মম (১৮৭৪-১৯৬৫) একজন ব্রিটিশ নাট্যকার, ঔপন্যাসিক এবং ছোটগল্পের লেখক ছিলেন। যুদ্ধের সময় এবং পরবর্তী সময়ে তিনি ভারত এবং দক্ষিণ পূর্ব এশিয়া ভ্রমণ করেছিলেন। Of Human Bondage -কে মমের সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ উপন্যাস হিসাবে বিবেচনা করা হয়। তাঁর অন্যান্য গুরুত্বপূর্ণ রচনার মধ্যে রয়েছে The Razor’s Edge, The Moon and Sixpence ইত্যাদি। বর্তমান পাঠ্যটি তাঁর একই নামের একটি সংক্ষিপ্ত গল্পের রূপান্তরিত সংস্করণ।

Princess September, the daughter of the king of Siam, was very unhappy.
সিয়ামের রাজার মেয়ে, রাজকন্যা সেপ্টেম্বর খুব অখুশি ছিল।
She was weeping alone one day in her own room when she saw a little bird hop in.
সে যখন একদিন তার নিজের ঘরে একা একা কাঁদছিল তখন সে একটি ছোট্ট পাখিকে লাফাতে লাফাতে ঘরের ভিতরে ঢুকতে দেখল।
Then the little bird began to sing.
তারপরে ছোট্ট পাখিটি গান গাইতে শুরু করল।
He sang a beautiful song all about the lake in the king’s garden and the willow trees reflected in the still water.
সে রাজার বাগানের হ্রদ এবং স্থির জলের মধ্যে প্রতিফলিত উইলো গাছগুলো সম্পর্কে একটি সুন্দর গান গাইল।
When he had finished, the Princess was not crying anymore.

“That was a very nice song”, she said.

“Would you want me to live with you?” said the little bird.

Princess September clapped her hands with delight.

Then the little bird hopped on to the end of the bed and sang her to sleep.
তারপরে ছোট্ট পাখিটি বিছানার শেষ অংশে বসল এবং গান গেয়ে তাকে ঘুম পারিয়ে দিল।
When she awoke the next day the little bird was still sitting there, and as she opened her eyes he said good morning.

She stretched out the first finger of her right hand so that it served as a perch.

The little bird flew down and sat on it.

They looked round the room.

“And what makes you think he’ll come back?” asked the princesses.

“He always does come back”, said September.

“Well, my dear,” said the princesses, “if you take our advice, pop him into the cage and keep him there.”
“বেশ, আমার প্রিয়,” রাজকন্যারা বলল, “তুমি যদি আমাদের পরামর্শ নাও, তাহলে তাকে খাঁচার ভিতরে ঢোকাও এবং তাকে সেখানে রাখ।”
“But I like to have him fly around the room”, said the Princess.

“Safety first,” said her sisters ominously.

Suddenly, September heard a tweet-tweet just behind her ear.
হঠাৎ, সেপ্টেম্বর তার কানের ঠিক পিছনে একটি টুইট-টুইট শব্দ শুনতে পেল।
The bird had come in quietly.
পাখিটি চুপ করে ভিতরে এসেছিল।
September felt her heart go thump-thump against her chest, and she made up her mind to take no more risks.
সেপ্টেম্বর অনুভব করল যে তার হৃদয় তার বুকের বিরুদ্ধে ধড়ফড় করছে, এবং কোনও ঝুঁকি না নেওয়ার জন্য মনস্থির করল।
She put up her hand and took hold of the bird.

The bird was quite used to this, so he suspected nothing.

He was surprised when she carried him to the cage, put him in, and shut the door on him.

The little bird tried to slip through the bars of the cage, but he couldn’t.

He beat against the door but of course, he couldn’t open it.

She jumped out of bed and ran to the cage.

She gave a startled cry, for there the little bird lay with his eyes closed, and he looked as if he were dead.

She opened the door and lifted him out.

Ans: I think the little bird would return to the Princess again because it loved her and he also promised that he would never forget her.
